The mission of OHED is to alleviate poverty, famine, diseases, illiteracy, and their related consequences in the South Kivu Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

OHEDONG Activities
In 2022, OHED is training more local communities on self-reliance activities that generate sufficient income for their households. We are launching farming, livestock, and fishing pond projects with our general funds and members’ contributions. We are also providing career, health and literacy trainings. This participatory approach facilitates the reduction of poverty, malnutrition, illiteracy, conflicts and diseases in operational zones. New activities will include at least 55 farms, 12 livestock breeding projects, and 11 fishing ponds. However, our success depends on raising sufficient funds. Background History

For more than twenty years, towns and villages in the eastern part of the DRC have suffered extortions, killings, lootings and sexual violence by armed groups and bandits. The number of Human Rights violations has increased in the rural areas where the government army and UN forces are not visible.

As a result, the inhabitants of the DR Congo (especially those residing in the South and North Kivu Provinces) have been fleeing their villages in search of safety, either in different villages or abroad. Governmental institutions and humanitarian agencies cannot reach the localities and villages due to insecurity created by armed groups. People continue to die of malnutrition and diseases such as HIV, syphilis, and TB. The rate of prostitution has increased out of desperation to earn money for food and supplies. Even in the refugee and IDPs’ camps, food and other items received from international humanitarian organizations or agencies do not meet the need.

In 2014, we initiated a meeting with a few Congolese people at Kagembe-Malingumu to find possible solutions to these problems. Many key questions arose during that meeting: What can we do while human beings like us continue to die of hunger? Who can assist us? Where can our voice be heard? How can we organize ourselves to sort out the problems of hunger and malnutrition? The participants agreed that Congolese must lead efforts and instantly supported the idea of creating OHED. They prioritized the fight against famine and poverty with the implementation of agriculture and livestock projects in rural areas. The success of those early efforts required charity, determination, and willingness from both OHED volunteers and the target communities. Now, we continue to help lead OHED as a visionary team.

Our projects are based on self-reliance, not as simple charity acts. For instance, instead of giving food, we teach our communities how to work hard.

Our Cause Depends on Donations

OHED is seeking trusted partners and equipment for offices, transport, and agricultural facilities. Between 2014 and 2017, we did not receive any support from national or international agencies. During those first three years, all needs were sorted out by our members.

Now we’d like to accomplish even more and that will require contributions from many more supporters. Donations to OHED support our efforts to alleviate poverty in the South Kivu Province of the DR Congo. We greatly appreciate all donations no matter their amount.

Thank you!

Message to Donors

"Today, the OHED NGO is a go-to resource for durable solutions and policy analysis on a wide variety of social, economic, and environmental concerns. But more than that, the OHED NGO has become critical to sustainable development for the most underprivileged householders in South Kivu Province. We just say many thanks to the Almighty God for our various successes. Congolese communities are reaching out and asking us to continue supporting them in their fights against poverty, hunger, illiteracy, conflicts and diseases for their welfare and livelihoods."
